Canada Games Women in Coaching Program

Coaches BC and Team BC support the Canada Games Apprentice Coach Program for Women in Coaching and Aboriginal Coaching.  Team BC has an opportunity to include a female apprentice coach and an aboriginal apprentice coach in two sports each (4 coaches total) for each Canada Games in winter and summer events. The Canada Games Apprentice Coach Program  is a cost shared program made possible through the partnership of the Province of British Columbia, the Canada Games Council, Sport Canada, Coaching Association of Canada, Provincial Coaching Coordinators, the Canada Games Host Society, selected Provincial/Territorial Sport Organizations and Apprentice Coaches.

Apprentice Coach Guidelines

  1. Up to two female coaches and two aboriginal coaches from each province and territory will be selected.
  2. The Apprentice coach must be maximum NCCP Introduction to Competition certified (Level 2 certified) and plan to complete their Competition Development certification within a year of the Canada Games.
  3. For a minimum of one year, but preferably two years, the Apprentice coach is to be integrated with the Canada Games coaching staff and team (i.e. athlete selection and training activities) leading up to and including the Canada Games.
  4. The Apprentice coach has never attended the Canada Games as a coach.
  5. The Apprentice coach has demonstrated potential through development and commitment to the sport.
  6. The Provincial Sport Organization ensures an appropriate Mentor coach (either a member of the Games coaching staff or a non-staff mentor) is assigned to the Apprentice coach.
  7. The Apprentice coach should be available to attend a series of Professional Development Seminars (to be confirmed at a later date) with the other Provincial/Territorial Apprentice coaches. These will include the Coaching Association of Canada’s annual Sport Leadership Conference.

The Apprentice coach will become part of the team's Canada Games coaching staff (in addition to the number of positions indicated in the Canada Games technical package and have full access to field of play at the Games).  Travel to the Games as well as accommodations and meals in the athletes' village will be provided.  Team BC will provide a ceremonial uniform and integrate the Apprentice coach in all Team BC functions and meetings, and support the Apprentice’s coach education. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Laura Watson at lwatson@coachesbc.ca or call (604)-333-3603.
